Following on from our introduction to the Wardrobe Tips Series, today we’re talking about the things we always put on first. Be they racy lacy, basic white cotton, sleek black satin or funky fluoro floral, underwear is our everyday companion and the foundation of every outfit.
Always spend as much as you can afford on good underwear – this is where it all starts, I have seen many an outfit ruined by seeing a panty line, drooping boobs or a bulging belly!
It’s well worth booking a proper brassiere fitting with a specialist. Large department stores have always had staff in the lingerie department, a lovely lady who makes you immediately comfortable with standing topless while she measures your assets. By the time she’s instructing you on the best technique for lowering yourself into the cups and only ever fastening the hooks while they’re at the back, the two of you will be old friends! This lady can tell you exactly what size bra you need to be wearing – listen to her! When it comes to over-shoulder-boulder-holders, this lady knows her stuff. She can help you to, er, elevate the way you present to the world.
Another important note: if you’re wearing white, skin-coloured underwear is the only option! Likewise, always wear black with black. That way, if a stray flash of strap or panty line makes an appearance, it won’t stand out nearly as much.
We are so lucky these days: we have access to a wonderful range of undergarments that can lift, flatten and smooth. Known as shapewear, there are slips and half-slips, knee-length pants, knickers that reach your bra line, and all manner of combinations of these. You can find something to suit any clothing ensemble – if you wear the right one, no one will know you even have it on! The well known brands are Spanx & Nancy Ganz, but there are many others around. Even Target have their own range, so it’s worth shopping around! Remember to always take the outfit you are planning to wear it with, so you can be sure that it works and will create the effect you are after.
